Supreme Court
The Supreme Court dismissed a plea challenging the environmental clearance granted for the Wayanad tunnel project, calling it a crucial infrastructure initiative for Kerala.
The Supreme Court of India has rejected a petition filed against the environmental clearance (EC) for the Wayanad tunnel road project in Kerala.
The case was filed by an environmental group (WPSS), which argued that:
- The tunnel passes through the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats
- It may increase landslide risks and harm biodiversit
However, the Court refused to stop the project because:
- The environmental clearance was given after expert studies
- Authorities followed proper legal procedures
- Courts should not interfere in technical decisions made by experts
- The Court also noted that the project:
- Will improve connectivity between Kozhikode and Wayanad
- Reduce travel time and congestion
- Act as a “lifeline” for the region
