Delhi High Court declines Rajpal Yadav’s request for more time to settle dues in a cheque bounce case and reserves its judgment, criticising shifting payment stands

On 3 April 2026, the Delhi High Court refused to grant Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav additional time to pay his pending dues in a cheque bounce case. The actor had requested an extension to settle dues amounting to nearly ₹6 crore, citing ongoing negotiations and financial constraints.

The bench, however, criticised Yadav’s inconsistent approach and noted that multiple previous deadlines and settlement attempts had already failed. The court observed that repeatedly granting more time could defeat the purpose of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, under which cheque bounce cases are treated seriously.

While the court denied the extension, it did not immediately pronounce the final judgment, instead reserving its verdict to review all submissions. Legal experts note that this case highlights the judiciary’s strict approach toward financial obligations and the growing emphasis on timely compliance in cheque bounce and financial disputes.

This ruling also sends a strong message to individuals and corporates that delaying payments through repeated requests for extensions will not necessarily protect them from legal consequences. The Delhi High Court’s decision reinforces the importance of honouring payment commitments promptly to avoid legal complications.
